George Carlin “You Are All Diseased”!

George Carlin 1998, “you are all diseased”: Like in most of his shows, Carlin does not simply make jokes, but using his caustic, explicit and straightforward humor he outlines in depth some basic social problems using a sharp political incorrect style.
Dirty humor and cleverness, basic Carlin’s elements. He begins the show bantering with the audience, shouting at them “fuck you!!! Just wanted to make you feel at home“! “A series of things that are pissing me off” an alternative tittle of the show, a great summary of “what you are going to see”. Carlin subliminally forces the audience to look at the real picture of the Western modern society slighting taboos like religion, food, names and words, airport security and more. His main target is not only to make people aware of the society’s problems but to suggest an alternative way of pondering about life by despising things that demean it.
The first issue is “airport security“. It is understandable that most of the people would not like to hear somebody claiming that “there is so much security in the airport, this is pointless, it does not do anything, terrorists can do their job using the back door” (something that has been confirmed with the 9/11 attack) . “Airport security stuff and police authority is here to reduce our liberty and remind us that they can fuck with us any time they want” (perhaps the greatest statement of all time). The conclusion “the whole western society is obsessed by security and protection“, a big sad truth! It looks like Carlin 10 years before was trying to warn us about the future and maybe to prevent the formation of a mini big brother society. (which is taking place today) His speech carries a lot of valid arguments disputing senseless authority, conformity and government control.
From airport security the discussion passes to hygiene issues and cleanses where “the media promote hygiene in a hysterical way in order to scare and manipulate the masses“. In fact “more people die in America from food poisoning every year than viruses and dangerous germs coming from lack of hygiene”. For once again history has justified him in the case of the swine flu. Indeed more people die every year from other typical viruses.
“Hygiene hysteria”, the fastest way to self destruction. The human body needs to be exposed in germs in order to “strengthen up its resistance”. Killing all the germs means simply lack of training. What it could happen to an unprepared immune system exposed to a virus attack? Whether we agree or not, this is an noteworthy opinion.
Religion: According to Wikipedia religiousness in the U$A is still strong. Of course Carlin is trying to see things from an irreligious point of view, something extremely venturesome for the American standards. The existence of God… where we have ended up! To believe in “angles”? What we have become! Weak personalities, brainwashed, without ability to see things logically, no illusions, no conclusions!!! It looks like Carlin disputes the existence of God in general, nevertheless, there is no evidence that he was an atheist. A few years ago he stated, “When it comes to God’s existence, I’m not an atheist and I’m not an agnostic. I’m an acrostic. The whole thing puzzles me“. Consequently his speech is more an anti-establishment delirium rather than an anti-theist propaganda. He only wants to challenge the voice of the conservative religious population. In his 1998 show,”What I am doing in New Jersey”, he has indicated “organized religion and organized crime working together to build a better America“.
Racial issues and minorities: “If white people try to oppress the black population, then why a lot of them try to imitate their music, their style and general way of life?“. Though provoking arguments… How really discriminative sounds the statement “it happens to be black”? (Great to see someone criticizing the neo-liberal pro-capitalist propaganda)! Even if we try to oppose to racism, do we still subliminally promote it? Probably we must adopt a new way to approach things in life and treat one another.
Brainwashed, are we? If there is so much hate and division between racial minorities then why the one tens to behave like the other? Of course it is a natural thing people to get close to each other more and more. Human beings cannot be separated but the whole social establishment forces us to keep that cruel division alive. Division and sectarianism were always considered the best method to control easier the masses. According to Jacque Fresco (The Zeitgeist movement) “we do not born with hatred, we do not born with bigotry. Those are all elements that we adopt from the inner society“. The psychology insists in the importance of an appropriate early education, as the influences a human brain receives during the first stages of life are crucial for the future development of a person. People born free and unspoiled ready to follow the way that serves their natural purposes. However, children who grow up in an intolerant society have more possibilities to accept segregation and discrimination, the same with the children who grow up in a family of violent parents will become violent as well (vicious circle). (Argument supported by Piaget, Erikson, Vygotski and more)
Politics, Parents, Children, School, Names: Definitely George Carlin is a threat for the conservatives. Back to the “What I am doing in New Jersey” show, “Law and order supporters want to put street criminals in jail in order to make life easy for the business criminals” meaning that authority does not reduces crime but it serves profit. In fact, with so much strict control why America has the highest record in school shootings? Of course authority does not sort out those problems and it has to be replaced with self authority and education.
“If honestly would introduced in the American life, the whole system would collapse”. It is clear that most of Carlin’s stand ups carry strong Anti-American statements. Nevertheless, his words are not an attack against the “being American” thing. He shows a sharp disagreements with the American corrupted establishment. Apart from that provocation is an effective method to attract more attention.
Carlin knew how to produce such a “revolutionary” speech without being afraid anything. He was not just a great comedian but a philosopher, an idealist. Loud, outspoken, serious and funny, he did not hesitate to speak about everything and everyone. A man who loved life, a man who will never be forgotten. Well said George, Rest in Peace!
